Surprisingly, ice cream was first invented in china 4,000 years ago. At that time getting milk from the livestock had started not long ago and milk was considered precious. Having milk ice that was made from mixing snow and boiled milk was a symbol of wealth. This is how the history of ice cream started.
Following China, the Italians started eating ice milk and fruit ice in the 14th century. the ice cream was highly graded that the recipes were confidential. That is why the cooks hired by wealthy people had a duty to keep the secret.
The ice cream secret was passed on to France from Italy. when katherine of medici married Henry ii of France in 1533, she had put out fruit ice in order to boast her country's food to other European countries. the chefs that she had hired presented different kinds of ice cream each day changing the ingredients(Àç·á) from lemon to lime, to orange and so forth in the celebration which lasted for a whole month.
As the freezing skills had developed by 1560, large amounts of ice cream were made. blasius villafranca, a Spanish doctor living in Rome, found that by mixing potassium nitrate(Áú»êÄ®·ý) with snow and ice, the temperature would drop to the freezing point in no time. that's when ice cream that was fully frozen and made wholly from cream was first invented.
Common people were able to taste ice cream when the Italians started selling ice cream in a refrigerator placed on a cart, and in 1870 the English started to call the Italian ice cream sellers the 'hokey-pokey man' this comes from imitating the ice cream sellers shouting 'ecco un poco (come on here)' this is also what they called them in the U.S. until 1920. in 1920, harry burt of ohio started selling chocolate-covered vanilla ice cream on sticks called 'good humor suckers' the expression 'hokey-pokey man' had disappeared and the expression, 'good humor man' came to life.
