Kicking the Habit More Difficult for Menthol Smokers ¸à¼Ö ´ã¹è Èí¿¬ÀÚµéÀÌ ´ã¹è ²÷±â ´õ Èûµé¾î If you smoke menthol cigarettes, you may have a harder time quitting. Advertising of menthol cigarettes are often aimed at the black population, and researchers say this may explain why blacks are more likely to die of smoking-related diseases than whites. 1) have a hard time ~ing: ~ÇÏ´Â µ¥ ¾î·Á¿òÀÌ ÀÖ´Ù 2) aim at: ~¸¦ ¿°µÎ¿¡ µÎ´Ù. ~¸¦ ¸ñÇ¥·Î ÇÏ´Ù 3) die of: ~·Î ÀÎÇØ ¼ûÁö´Ù 4) be likely to: ~ÇÒ °¡´É¼ºÀÌ ÀÖ´Ù ¸à¼Ö´ã¹è Èí¿¬ÀÚ°¡ ´ã¹è¸¦ ²÷´Â °Ô ´õ Èûµé°Í °°´Ù. ¸à¼Ö´ã¹è ±¤°í´Â ÀÚÁÖ ÈæÀεéÀ» ´ë»óÀ¸·Î Çϴµ¥ À̰ÍÀÌ ÈæÀεéÀÌ ¹éÀκ¸´Ù ´ã¹è¿Í °ü·ÃµÈ Áúº´À¸·Î »ç¸ÁÇÒ È®·üÀÌ ³ôÀº ÀÌÀ¯¶ó°í ¿¬±¸ÀÚµéÀº ¸»ÇÑ´Ù. Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco studied the association between smoking menthol cigarettes and quitting, the build-up of calcium in the arteries leading to the heart, and the change in lung function over 10 years. Doctors examined study participants and their smoking habits in 1985 and again every few years for 15 years. Among the 1,535 smokers at the start of the study, 63 percent preferred menthol cigarettes, and 36 percent preferred non-menthol. Researchers report 89 percent of blacks smoked menthol cigarettes compared to 29 percent of whites. 1) artery: µ¿¸Æ 2) lead to: ~·Î ¿¬°áµÇ´Ù 3) at the start of: ~ÀÇ Ãʹݿ¡ 4) compared to: ~¿¡ ºñÇؼ »÷ÇÁ¶õ½Ã½ºÄÚ Ä¶¸®Æ÷´Ï¾Æ ´ëÇÐÀÇ ¿¬±¸¿øµéÀº ¸à¼Ö ´ã¹è Èí¿¬ÀÚµé°ú ±Ý¿¬ÀÇ »ó°ü°ü°è¿Í ½ÉÀåÀ¸·Î À¯ÀԵǴ µ¿¸Æ¼Ó Ä®½·ÀÇ Çü¼º, ½Ê³â¿¡ °ÉÄ£ Æó±â´ÉÀÇ º¯È¸¦ ¿¬±¸Çß´Ù. Researchers report those who smoked menthol cigarettes in 1985 were more likely to still be smoking at their follow-up exams. But they say the reason was mostly because of the combination of blacks being more likely to smoke menthols and less likely to quit smoking. Results also show decline in lung function and calcium build-up in the arteries over 10 years were associated with the number of cigarettes smoked, but whether the cigarettes were menthol or not did not seem to make a difference. 1) follow up: µÚµû¸£´Â, À̾îÁö´Â 2) be more likely to: ´õ ~ÇÒ °¡´É¼ºÀÌ Å©´Ù 3) be less likely to: ´ú ~ÇÒ °¡´É¼ºÀÌ Å©´Ù 4) make a difference: Â÷À̰¡ ÀÖ´Ù ¿¬±¸¿øµéÀº 1985³â¿¡ ¸à¼Ö´ã¹è¸¦ ÇÇ¿ü´ø »ç¶÷µéÀÌ ´ÙÀ½ °Ë»ç¿¡¼µµ ¿ª½Ã ´ã¹è¸¦ ÇÇ¿ì°í ÀÖÀ» È®·üÀÌ ³ô¾Ò´Ù°í ÀüÇß´Ù. ±× ÀÌÀ¯´Â ÈæÀεéÀÌ ¸à¼Ö´ã¹è¸¦ ¼±È£ÇÏ°í ±Ý¿¬ÇÏ´Â »ç¶÷ÀÌ Àû´Ù´Â µÎ °¡Áö°¡ ÀÌÀ¯°¡ º¹ÇÕÀûÀ¸·Î ³ªÅ¸³ °ÍÀ¸·Î º¸ÀδÙ. ¶Ç Áö³ ½Ê³â°£ Æó±â´ÉÀÌ ¾àÈµÇ°í µ¿¸Æ¼Ó Ä®½·ÀÇ Áõ°¡·®Àº ÇÇ¿î ´ã¹èÀÇ °¹¼ö°¡ °ü·ÃÀÌ ÀÖÁö¸¸ ±× ´ã¹è°¡ ¸à¼ÖÀÎÁö ¾Æ´ÑÁö¿Í´Â »ó°üÀÌ ¾ø´Â °ÍÀ¸·Î ³ªÅ¸³µ´Ù. "Mentholation of cigarettes does not seem to explain disparities in ischemic heart disease and obstructive pulmonary disease between African-Americans and European Americans in the United States but may partially explain lower rates of smoking cessation among African-American smokers," the authors conclude. "It is possible, therefore, that switching from menthol cigarettes to non-menthol cigarettes may facilitate subsequent smoking cessation, especially in African-Americans, and thereby reduce tobacco-related health disparities." African-Americans tend to smoke less than European Americans but have much higher rates of cancer, heart disease, and other smoking-related illnesses. 1) disparity: ºÒÀÏÄ¡, ºÒ±ÕÇü 2) cessation: Áß´Ü 3) facillitate: ½±°ÔÇÏ´Ù ¸à¼Ö´ã¹è´Â ¹Ì±¹³» ÇãÇ÷¼º ½ÉÀåÁúȯÀ̳ª Æó»ö¼º ÆóÁúȯÀ» ¾Î´Â ÈæÀΰú ¹éÀÎÀÇ ¼ö°¡ ¿Ö ºÒ±ÕÇüÀ» ÀÌ·ç´ÂÁö ¼³¸íÇØ ÁÖÁö´Â ¸øÇÏÁö¸¸ ÈæÀÎÈí¿¬ÀÚµéÀÇ ³·Àº ±Ý¿¬À²À» ºÎºÐÀûÀ¸·Î ¼³¸íÇØ ÁÙ ¼ö ÀÖÀ¸¸ç µû¶ó¼ ¸à¼Ö´ã¹è¿¡¼ º¸Åë´ã¹è·Î ¹Ù²Û´Ù¸é Èí¿¬µµ ¿ëÀÌÇØÁú ¼ö ÀÖÀ¸¸ç Èí¿¬°ü·Ã ÁúȯÀ» ÁÙÀÏ ¼öµµ ÀÖ´Ù´Â °á·Ð¿¡ µµ´ÞÇÑ´Ù°í ÀüÇß´Ù.
